Need to start this recap by addressing the controversial comments Nicki Minaj made about the undisputed lyrical king, Kendrick Lamar. Towards the end of the interview Nicki went against the grain by taking offense to Kendrick’s claim as King of New York. She actually took it personally because she explained that he has been ripping off her style by doing crazy voices in his songs. She clearly is not a a fan of the West Coast rapper being praised for a certain lyrical style that she made famous, combined with the fact that New York City is her hometown. This could get interesting…
Anyways, The 212 would like to thank Watchloud for an exclusive invite to attend the #CRWN series with special guest Nicki Minaj. Elliot Wilson interviewed Hip Hop’s Queen last night at LPR in the West Village of Manhattan, but this was much more than an interview.
The 15th CRWN Event #CRWN XV was dubbed the single greatest in #CRWN history, by Elliot Wilson himself, within the first 20 minutes of taping. Rocking a Frank Lucas type fur, ‘Nick walked out to her new smash off the Pinkprint, “Want Some More”, and gave the first ever impromptu performance of the #CRWN series after seeing most of the crowd was rapping every lyric to the song. I have never seen such an engaging connection between artist and fan. This was not the last time that she gave us some bars unexpectedly as she would go into Acapella verses after just quoting one line of a song.
The interview itself was one of the most revealing and personal for Minaj. I could tell she had been exhausted from her current press run for the Pink Print, and knew that she had already filmed both Ellen and Fallon earlier in the day. She even admitted that she had been up since 4 am working nonstop but she didn’t mind because she was here for her most loyal fans. Topics included her recent breakup, often referring to her ex by 1st name, and claiming that she still loves him but listed the various qualities that she needs in a man to settle down again, including honesty and “being a real nigga”. She also admitted she really wants to have a kid but is waiting for the right time because she currently could not focus all of her attention on children.
She commented on the Cash Money Record situation by revealing she knew something was going on between Wayne and Baby, but never asked further because “it would be like getting in the middle of an argument with her two brothers.” She commented on the lyrics to her new banger, “ONLY”, by revealing that her admission about Drake and Weezy was just something to say because she could not figure out how to start the verse and also that both rappers heard her verse and played off of it in order to write theirs with their own admissions. She joked that “she couldn’t fuck with Drizzy anymore” after his verse. She also admitted that Lil’ Wayne once called to tell her she was kicked out of Young Money and she sent him a heartfelt email after, and they patched things up.
Nicki really caught my attention when she shot down the haters by saying even though she makes pop records she has a layer of skill that many pop rappers will never have. Part one of the will air tomorrow on Watchloud.
