Aziz Ansari performed to not one, but TWO, sold-out crowds at MSG on Friday night. He was filming for his new stand-up special so crowd lights and cameras were prevalent throughout. Before coming out on stage himself, Aziz had a Michael Jackson impersonator, @mjthelegend_, liven up the crowd followed by a very funny Hannibal Buress.
Aziz started the show with a speech about crowds and their cell phones and cameras; claiming that even though he asks before every show for people to put their phones away, nobody ever listens. To solve this problem, he staged photo-ops by posing in front of a giant LED screen with different backgrounds of lava, penguins, puppies and glaciers. If you follow him on Instagram, you probably know what I’m talking about. After that was over, the show went on and for the first time in a very long time, I was amongst an audience that was attentive and in the moment. Kudos to Aziz.
After his no-cellphones’ introduction, Aziz jumped right into his usual routine – discussing dating in the 21st Century with topics ranging from temptation when in a relationship to texting when single. He also managed to do a bit combining problems in the food industry with a flawless Ja Rule impression. You have to see it to be believe it because that sh*t was cray.
Aziz kept the crowd laughing for over an hour before saying goodbye and walking off stage. He came back to a standing ovation and performed a couple more bits. He seemed genuinely grateful, humbled and excited to be standing in front of a sold-out MSG. For his second show, confetti exploded over the crowd and he brought his parents out on stage to close out the night. For those who were not lucky enough to see it live, his stand up special will be released later this year.
