As superstar DJs continue to be center stage at major festivals, the demand for visual production in New York City nightclubs has been on the rise. Following in the footsteps of major Vegas nightclubs, who emulate popular festival style production, stage lighting and show performers have become an essential tool for a nightclub’s success. As bottle service oriented venues keep ringing in the cash, the appeal for over the top displays and performances continue to grow. Manhattan nightclubs have been spending thousands of dollars a night to create shows of lights and dancers, in an effort to attract big crowds. From aerialists to dancing robots, event promoters and club owners are taking things further and ramping up the creativity for this upcoming Halloween night. Based on production and performances, we’ve put together a quick list of our Top 3 Halloween Party destinations for 2014.
Space Ibiza NY
This mega club has exploded onto the nightlife scene since its opening weekend which was a short six weeks ago. Spawning from the legendary nightclub in Ibiza, this venue has superseded expectations as a big room electronic dance club. Techno and Tech House DJs such as Victor Calderone and Luciano have been pumping sounds on a state of the art Funktion One sound system week after week. But at the forefront of the spectacle is their edgy-yet-chic costume performers. In any given night, an attendee will witness dozens of female and male performers decked out in elaborate costumes that can be both sexy or just plain weird. This Friday you can look forward to everything from stilt walkers, creepy masked dancers, and space themed creatures, while rotating disco balls shoot beams of light onto the dance floor. Though it might feel like Halloween every night at Space Ibiza NY, you can expect some much bigger surprises for the holiday weekend.
The weekly circus theme party dubbed ‘Cirque Fridays’ has been a running success for over a year now. Each week Highline Ballroom is packed on two levels with patrons who are sprayed with high power smoke canons and massive amounts of confetti raining from the air of this high ceiling venue. Aerialists and burlesque dancers are frequent acts alongside costumed smurfs and pandas. This year’s Halloween edition of Cirque Fridays throws in a extra spookiness to the already outrageous circus theme. The event organizers have confirmed entertainment by sword and fire jugglers, creepy clowns, and contortionists. Along with other surprises, there might even be another appearance by the popular dancing LED robot.
Lavo New York
When stepping inside the doors the Lavo Nightclub, it’s hard to imagine that the swanky nightclub has host some of the best parties for over four years. This high end spot continues to be the playing ground for some of the highest table spenders and the social elite. Though a small place in comparison to the big rooms that have opened since, Lavo has been able to keep up with the competition of big scale productions by paying attention to the details. Our favorite feature is the flashy LED screens that blast out cooling smoke that line the ceiling of the dance floor (a creative use of a small space). Our hats also go off to Lavo for having some of the hottest, modelesque dancers. Every night they don custom designed outfits such as glow in the dark butterfly gear or dress as human disco balls, head to toe in mosaic glass tiles. Expect the club to keep with its lavish themes for Halloween. We’re hoping to run into the Victorian King on his throne greeting guests at the door, or ladies on Roman chariots delivering Dom Perignon to the tables inside.
