Less than two weeks until his digital album ‘Lion (In My Head)’ drops on the interwebs, Musical Freedom artist MOTi had a special Saturday. After spinning at EDC Orlando during the day, the Netherlands native flew north to shred the iconic Webster Hall here in the212. What the audience didn’t know was a surprise guest, none other than record label owner Tiësto, was in the house. He was not there just to show face and support MOTi, they went back to back for over an hour as the crowd roared with energy into the wee hours of Sunday.
Shooting a show with media credentials always provides a unique perspective at a concert. Instead of anticipating the next drop as a fan of the music, one must foresee the dynamic between the artist and the crowd. In this case, witnessing the teacher and student operate together was a thing of beauty. Straight out of an SNL skit, MOTi and Tiësto went knob for knob and button for button with an occasional whisper in each other’s ears.
What I assume was the sharing of tips and tricks and planning of the track selection, one could sense the magnitude of this show for rising star MOTi. On multiple occasions, he turned down Tiësto’s shot offers to make sure the mix was being executed to perfection. It was quite refreshing to feel the passion running through MOTi’s veins during one of if not the largest show of his career. Having his big brother by his side certainly motivated the Dutchie to leave everything on the decks.
