For the first time since 1965, NYC has changed its speed limit; going from 30 MPH to 25 MPH. This change comes from Mayor DeBlasio’s Vision Zero plan, in which he wants to lower the number of traffic related deaths. There were 291 just last year! DeBlasio backs the speed limit change with scientific evidence proving twice the chance of survival when being hit by a car going 25 MPH as opposed to 30 MPH.
Rest assured, the new speed limit will have no effect on cost of cab rides, as the fares are determined by when cabs moving over 12 MPH or when standing still.
3,000 new speed limit signs are set to be placed at various entry points, highways and airports. It will take a little while to fully implement the new speed limit but expect safer streets in the coming months!
