Mayor Bloomberg is on a mission to make New York a healthier place. For his latest proposal, he’s looking to ban stores from publicly displaying cigarettes and other tobacco products in an effort to reduce teen smoking.
“We know that out of sight doesn’t always mean out of mind, but in many cases it can. And we think this measure will help reduce impulse purchases, and if it does, it will literally save lives,” Bloomberg said.
Under the proposal, tobacco products would have to be hidden under counters, in cabinets, etc., but stores can still advertise that they’re available and even post the prices.
In contrast to his recent soda ban proposal that was denied, Bloomberg said the new tobacco proposal will be introduced in the City Council…something he neglected to do with the soda ban.
