Its official. After going on a bi-monthly print schedule a few years back, the print edition of XXL Magazine will be no more. Townsquare Media has officially bought the 17-year old XXL Magazine and will focus on making it a 100 percent digital property. The current August/September 2014 issue is the second to last issue of XXL and the final issue is currently in print as we speak (so make sure to grab it as a final memento of hey day). Antenna Magazine and King Magazine, also Harris Publication properties, were also part of the deal.
“We incubated something digitally, but the Townsquare people can take it to the next level with their digital expertise,” said Ben Harris, president of Harris Publications, which started XXL in 1997 to rival Vibe.
“We think XXL has strong potential in both the digital and live events market,” said Bill Wilson, the chief content officer of Townsquare, who said the title could make sporadic, special issue print appearances.
So its definitely sad news to report as XXL has and always will be a staple in hip-hop history. And a big shout out to Rob Markman, former Editor at XXL and now at MTV News, who always welcomed us with open arms to the XXL offices.
