Prescription painkillers OxyContin are one of the most popular street drugs in any given city. As a new preventative measure, “bait bottles” have been placed in pharmacies around New York, equipped with GPS tracking devices.
“In the event of a robbery or theft, we’ll be able to track the bottle, which may lead us to stash locations across the city,” NYPD’s Ray Kelly said. “We’re also asking industry researchers to explore the possibility of applying nanotechnology in such a way that individual ‘bait’ tablets could be tracked by GPS.”
This all comes as a part of “Operation Safety Cap,” which also includes building a database of almost 6,000 licensed pharmacists in and around New York City, as well as advanced security in pharmacies such as installing alarm systems and keeping stores well-lit after hours.
