Subway crimes have steadily risen over the last 3 years but finally, 2013 breaks the bad trend. The NYPD reports that thefts, robberies and assaults are down 7% since last summer, and a total of 16% this year!
A major reason is because of the Transit Bureau under Chief Joseph Fox, who has been giving out extreme punishments to the criminals responsible for the underground crimes. The following have also been done to get the crime rate down:
• Police patrols have been walking through late-night trains with conductors announcing their presence.
• An officer is placed on every train running from Friday and Saturday night into the predawn hours. [Some lines]
• More undercover officers conducting sting operations targeting iPhone thieves.
• Cops have distributed more than 1.4 million safety-tip fliers to riders.
Hopefully the crime rate continues to stay down!
