It was assumed Tim Tebow would automatically be the contender to start after Rex Ryan benched Mark Sanchez, so many were surprised when Greg McElroy ended up doing so instead. Ryan had an interesting explanation for his reasoning:
“I can answer this question a million ways — frontward, backward, sideways, anything else,” he said last night on a conference call. “It’s my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever. Everything it comes down to is, I believe it’s the best decision for our team. That’s the only factor that goes into these decisions.”
“I know [Tebow] is a tremendous competitor. I don’t doubt that at all,” he further elaborated. “But for right now, I think this move is best for our team in this game. I believe that and that’s why I’m making the move that I’m making.”
