$140 million and TONS of hard labor later, the Rockaway Beaches are ready to re-open for the summer. Hurricane Sandy caused some major damage to the area, and while the repairs still aren’t fully complete, they’ve come a long way since October.
“Our goal for Friday is to have all the islands open and have access to the shore,” said Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski.
City-operated beaches will be open for swimming beginning Saturday. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, call 311 or visit nyc.gov/parks.

David Karp is New York City’s happiest 26 year old. Or hell, he’s probably the happiest person in New York today.
David grew up in the Upper West Side, and was the creator of Tumblr, which he created when he was 21, back in 2007. And it definitely wasn’t an overnight success for David Karp. He’s been coding and tampering with developing since he was 11.
Well, this morning, it was made official that Yahoo would indeed buy the blogging social network for an estimated $1.1 billion, most of which is in cash. This leaves David with about 25 percent of that sale amount going straight to his bank account.
Congrats David. Don’t spend it all in one place.
UPDATE: David releases a statement and signs it off with a good ole Tumblr-esque “Fuck Yeah”
